MKS Instruments Inc has introduced the non-PFAS version of Zintek® 200, a premium, silver zinc flake basecoat engineered for superior corrosion resistance and long-term durability in high stress environments.
Designed to meet the rigorous demands of the automotive, construction, agriculture and heavy machinery sectors, the Zintek® 200 process combines exceptional corrosion protection, robust adhesion and best-in-class coverage rate – all without the environmental drawbacks associated with harmful heavy metals or PFAS substances.
With an innovative silver zinc flake formulation, the coating forms a conductive zinc aluminium layer during the baking process, creating a sacrificial shield that mitigates substrate degradation. In standardised ISO 9227 Neutral Salt Spray Testing (NSST), the Zintek® 200 basecoat consistently exceeds 1,000 hours without corrosion, highlighting its suitability for components exposed to intense environmental conditions. This basecoat has also been rigorously tested and fulfills stringent OEM standards, including those set by Volkswagen (TL245), Mercedes-Benz (MBN50544) and General Motors (GMW3359).
In-line with MKS Atotech’s commitment to sustainability, the new Zintek® 200 basecoat version does not contain PFAS and hazardous heavy metals, such as hexavalent chromium, cadmium, cobalt, lead and nickel. This composition offers a safer alternative to conventional coatings, providing industries with a high performing, eco-friendly solution that aligns with global sustainability goals and reduces health and environmental risks.
MKS Atotech comments: “The Zintek® 200 sets a new benchmark for coverage efficiency, with the technology achieving a coverage rate of
20m²/kg at a 10μm dry film thickness, outperforming conventional zinc flake coatings. This efficiency translates to a lower cost per square metre of the protected surface, allowing companies to maximise material usage without compromising on protection or quality.”
The basecoat’s high adhesion and impact resistance make it ideal for parts under constant mechanical stress. The basecoat’s attractive silver finish, and long-lasting resilience, ensure optimal performance across a variety of components – such as fasteners, chassis parts, brake components, springs, and clips in the automotive industry, components exposed to challenging outdoor environments in the construction and heavy machinery industries, as well as equipment designed for corrosive, moisture intensive settings in the agriculture industry.
“With our Zintek® 200 zinc flake technology we’re delivering more than just a corrosion resistant coating, we’re providing an environmentally responsible, cost-effective solution that meets the quality and regulatory demands of today’s industries,” explains Tomislav Maric, global product manager ZFC at MKS Atotech. “This basecoat represents our dedication to pioneering materials that protect not only metal surfaces but also the health of our planet.”
