Berdan Civata has been laying the groundwork for compliance with the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) regulation, by taking steps to build digital infrastructure to ensure full CBAM compliance and long-term sustainability, enabling the company to track and optimise energy consumption for every product manufactured.
Berdan also has a dedicated team to ensure the company adheres to international standards, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and compliance. As the integrated management systems manager, Özlem Yalçın (right) is responsible for the implementation and maintenance of Berdan’s comprehensive management systems, aligning the business’ operations with sustainability goals, particularly in the context of emerging regulations such as CBAM.
“Dedicated internal departments for energy and sustainability have been established and we are in the process of developing systems to calculate and report the carbon emissions of every product we manufacture,” explains Özlem. “However, that comes with its challenges. One major challenge with CBAM lies in calculating values for small and simple suppliers, many of whom operate with small teams lacking specific departments. The level of effort required to collect accurate data from these suppliers is often disproportionate to their actual carbon impact, which in some cases can be as low as 0.0001.”
Özlem continues: “While we fully support the goals of CBAM, we believe that simplified procedures or exemptions should be introduced for micro suppliers to avoid unnecessary complexity. Clarifying this aspect would help all parties involved save time, reduce the administrative burden, as well as focus resources where they matter most.”
That includes Berdan’s underlining commitment to traceability. Technical Operations Director Dergah Uysal plays a pivotal role in overseeing the company’s production processes and technological advancements, ensuring that Berdan Civata remains at the forefront of the industry, delivering high-quality products while minimising environmental impact. “We are able to provide the technical specifications of a product we manufactured 50 years ago and can still be held accountable for a product delivered decades earlier,” proudly states Dergah. “This level of traceability is critical for large-scale, long-term investments such as bridges, nuclear power plants and stadiums, airports, as well as wind turbines – where the durability of each component must be guaranteed and verifiable for years to come.”
In order to offer this traceability, Berdan has made substantial investments in digital infrastructure to ensure full CBAM compliance and long-term sustainability. A Manufacturing Execution System (MES) has been integrated with an ERP software to digitally monitor every stage of production. In addition, the company has also installed 100 energy analysers across its machinery and created ‘real time’ dashboards to track and optimise energy consumption.
Dergah explains: “These investments serve two key purposes. First, they enable us to calculate the carbon footprint of each individual product with high accuracy. This not only enables us to meet CBAM reporting requirements but also provides our customers with a clear and verifiable sustainability profile for every order. Secondly, and perhaps more critically for our clients, working with a CBAM compliant supplier like Berdan Civata means they will benefit from lower carbon related taxes when importing products into the EU starting in 2026.”
Beyond compliance, Berdan’s digital monitoring capabilities enable the company to conduct detailed energy efficiency analyses. By identifying machines that consume more energy than necessary, the manufacturer can optimise or replace them, leading to lower production costs and more competitive pricing for customers – while also contributing to a cleaner production process.
Dergah continues: “By encouraging transparency and accountability, CBAM reports will become essential documents for procurement teams, especially in industries that prioritise long-term, high responsibility projects, such as infrastructure, energy and public works. Starting in January 2026, we expect customers to increasingly demand CBAM reports as part of their purchasing criteria.”
“At Berdan Civata, we are not only preparing for current requirements, but also proactively adapting our systems and processes to align with the evolving regulatory environment,” concludes Dergah. “Our commitment is to remain a trusted partner for our customers by ensuring compliance and transparency.
