With the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) regulation accelerating the shift towards sustainable and low carbon sourcing, Taiwanese construction fastener manufacturer Fong Prean has taken several steps towards its emission tracking capabilities by implementing various data and monitoring systems, as well as working towards ISO 14064.
With these changes, Fong Prean Industrial Co Ltd has intensified its focus on green manufacturing and carbon reduction to better differentiate itself from the global market. The company has implemented fully audited carbon data collection processes, as well as an electricity monitoring system with ‘real time’ insights to manage and reduce energy consumption.
“We are fully CBAM ready,” proudly states Fong Prean. “We have completed internal data collection for emissions related to electricity, raw materials and production processes, and we are now awaiting final third-party certification for ISO 14064. Our carbon footprint data system is in place and we are able to provide verified emissions data for products exported to the EU.”
The company adds: “EU buyers are expected to prioritise suppliers who are transparent with emissions data and compliant with regulations and, as a result, we have received noticeably more enquiries specifically related to carbon footprint data. This is of course an indication to us that customers are factoring emissions into procurement decisions, which is why it is so important that we are strengthening our emission tracking capabilities to provide accurate, traceable and low carbon fastener solutions – giving our customers a competitive edge in CBAM compliant supply chains.”
Safeguarding the supply chain is another important aspect in conforming to the CBAM regulation, which is why Fong Prean also works closely with its suppliers to ensure CBAM compliance across the board. “We are engaging with our key suppliers to align carbon reporting standards,” comments the company. “We are also aware of the requirement to register for the third country operator’s portal and plan to complete registration in advance of the CBAM enforcement deadline.”
Fong Prean is also making plans for further investment to enable the company to react quickly and effectively regarding not just CBAM, but further implementation of potential regulations. “We plan to expand our environmental management system, invest in more energy efficient equipment and explore low carbon raw material alternatives,” explains Fong Prean. “Sustainability is a long-term commitment, not just a short-term compliance effort.”
