As part of its commitment to providing the highest service levels to the metal processing industry, Steel Dynamics Group believes it must also meet high corporate behaviour standard, including the requirements of sustainability – with the Group recently partnering with Positive Planet to simplify the pathway to ‘net zero’.
Since it was established in 2011, Steel Dynamics Group – consisting of Steel Dynamics UK, Bornmore Metals, Offshore Stainless Supplies and P&P Non-Ferrous Ltd – has adopted a philosophy of achieving affordable, consistent growth through its expertise in metal processing and in-depth product portfolio, coupled with continual investment in manufacturing excellence, as well as unrivalled logistics.
To add to this, Steel Dynamics Group has also looked to develop its corporate behaviour and underline the values that define the Group as a business, especially when it comes to the topic of sustainability. That is why the Group recently partnered with Positive Planet, a company that specialises in helping businesses to simplify their pathways to ‘net zero’, as well as to help gather data to establish a true carbon footprint.
“By working with Positive Planet, we are able to collate data and ensure that it is analysed and monitored regularly,” points out Simon Howorth, group marketing manager at Steel Dynamics. “This then enables us to accurately input initiatives to reduce energy consumption and run each business within the group more efficiently. This is in addition to developing a roadmap of initiatives to help offset the energy needed to run each company, with a goal to becoming a carbon ‘net zero’ business by 2050.”
Steps that Steel Dynamics Group is already taking include minimising waste generation and maximising recycling, which are central to sustainable metal processing. “Factors such as project specifications, structural requirements, and cutting constraints, are assessed to determine the most efficient use of steel bars and plates, thereby significantly reducing waste,” explains Simon. “The waste that is produced is fully recycled ensuring we play our part in a circular economy.”
Furthermore, through the Great British Nuclear initiative, which was set-up in 2023 and will see the UK embrace nuclear power as a low carbon, reliable energy source, Steel Dynamics Group is able to play a prominent role through its pioneering processes and service solutions, as well as stringent adherence to nuclear safety standards, which are a testament to the Group’s dedication to advancing the nuclear industry.
“As Great British Nuclear sets the stage for a thriving nuclear renaissance in the UK, it is evident that with leaders like the Steel Dynamics Group family of companies, the nation’s path to a cleaner, greener and more sustainable future is poised for success,” underlines Simon.
Sustainability of people
Steel Dynamics Group also recognises the importance of people as part of its social values and corporate responsibility. That is why the companies within the group participate in community projects and support the development of young people through apprenticeship schemes and training opportunities.
“The Group is committed to promoting and encouraging apprentices across a number of business functions, offering training in the most up to date technology, supported with a hands-on mentoring approach, which encourages innovation and unlocks talent potential for the future,” reports Simon. “Each business is also committed to its local community with most employees coming from the local area. Through partnerships with local charities, and organisations, the businesses also provide essential resources and support to those in need.”
Ensuring that each business within Steel Dynamis Group is connecting with its employees, and local community, also helps manage the skills shortage that is a significant issue within the metals industry, as well as engineering as a whole. “It is vital that we invest in our employees and provide opportunities for growth and development, as well as showing they are driving a sustainable future,” states Simon. “By doing so, the group can attract and retain top talent, ensuring that it has the skilled workforce it needs to succeed.”
Steel Dynamics Group’s commitment to people can take many forms, including training and development programmes, mental health first aiders, private healthcare, cost of living benefits packages, as well as a positive work environment. “By investing in its employees, the Steel Dynamics Group can create a culture of excellence and innovation, where employees are motivated to perform at their best and contribute to the group’s success,” concludes Simon.
