A spotlight on innovation 01 February 2017

One of the many attractions at Fastener Fair Stuttgart is the Route to Fastener Innovation Competition – a key platform for innovations and new technologies in the fastener industry. Taking place again at this year’s show, we take a look back at 2015’s award winners and the innovative products.

After a record number of entries in the 2015 competition, Phillips Screw Company was awarded first place for its External MORTORQ® Super bolt design. The External MORTORQ Super bolt design reduces head height by 20% compared to the 12-point bolt it replaced. In addition, it provides 1.4 times the drive surface contact area and 2.5 times the removal surface contact for improved torque transmission and assured serviceability and maintenance. Weight savings are 30lbs (13.6kg) per 1,000 pieces compared to the original ¾ inch (19mm) diameter bi-hex head multiphase alloy bolt. Initially developed for the aerospace industry, where weight is often a critical concern, the new bolt design has rapidly gained applications in many markets since winning the award.
“Winning the Innovator award helped build an early buzz around the product and was a key component in helping engineers become familiar with the new product in the early launch stage,” comments Mike Mowins, president at Phillips Screw Company. “Phillips Screw has always been a leader in the development of new fastener technology and the award helped to reinforce Phillips’ dominance in the market as the global leader. The ease of entry into the competition and the critical review by a knowledgeable panel made the decision to enter the competition an easy one. The benefit of having a new product receive critical review and acclaim is immeasurable when launching a game changing technology like our new bolt design.
We were excited about the success winning the Innovator award brought and we look forward to entering some new technologies that we have in the pipeline in the coming years.”
Second place was awarded to fischer Deutschland Vetriebs GmbH for its greenline range – six plugs and one two-component injection resin – which reflects the company’s long-standing concern for sustainability and environmental protection. All of fischer’s ‘green’ products have the same performance features as their grey counterparts such as quality, durability, usage, functions and loads. The injection resin has the ETA approval Option 7. Available in many markets including central and northern Europe, the greenline range is popular in Scandinavia where public tenders often demand alternative products made with sustainable materials. Its lead market is in Germany, where there is an increasing demand for the complete range and a continuous growing turnover.
Finally third place was awarded to Regg Rolling, a division of Regg Inspection Srl, for its R40 ‘High-Speed’ two-die cylindrical thread rolling machine – which has a production rate of up to 60 parts/minute and can roll threads with diameters ranging from ½ inch to 3 inches.
“We were very proud to be a winner of the 2015 competition,” explains Riccardo D’Ambrosio, CEO at Regg Inspection Srl. “Thanks to the award, we have been fortunate enough to pass our knowledge of innovative cylindrical thread rolling technology to both current and potential customers. We look forward to participating in the 2017 edition with further innovative technologies, which will help to increase the competitiveness and cost-effectiveness of our customers’ products.”
For the 2017 Fastener Fair Stuttgart show, taking place on the 28th – 30th March, Fastener + Fixing Magazine is pleased to announce that it will, once again, sponsor the Route to Fastener Innovation Competition. Every entrant will be previewed in the March issue of Fastener + Fixing Magazine and in addition will be provided with a special logo for their stand highlighting the company’s entry.
A panel of experienced industry judges will review all the entrants and will decide on the three most deserving of the accolade of Fastener Technology Innovator 2017. On the final day of the show there will be a special presentation to the winners on the Fastener + Fixing Magazine stand (Hall 5, Stand 2422).
