750 tonne capacity tensile testing device 15 February 2023

Turkish manufacturer Berdan Civata has introduced a new tensile testing device that is capable of carrying out a tensile test up to 750 tonnes – enabling it to apply a tensile test on a M72 bolt, as a full body.

Initially Berdan designed a tensile testing device that was capable of tensile testing up to 500 tonnes – with the company recording that when the tensile test was applied to a M72 bolt, Grade 10.9, the recorded ‘breaking point’ was at 430 tonnes.

However, with the wingspans of onshore and offshore wind turbines, and therefore the diameters of the required fasteners, continuously increasing. There was demand for a more sophisticated 750 tonne capacity tensile testing device, which Berdan went on to design, manufacture and is now in use.

“The most remarkable advantage of our innovative device is its ability to apply tensile testing to a fastener’s full body,” states Berdan. “Tensile tests applied to fasteners that shafts are reduced, only provide information about the strength of the internal structure of the tested material. However, there are a lot of processes in bolt manufacturing. During the manufacturing process a fault can occur on an item’s surface, which can lead to fractures.  When tensile tests are applied to items where shafts are reduced, faults occurring on the items’ surfaces will remain unnoticed. This is because with a reduction of the item’s shaft, faults on the item’s surface are removed. In this case the test will not indicate the real performance of the
item in the application area and this can lead to fatal accidents. That is why we developed this larger tensile testing device, so that the full body of fasteners can be tested and customers can be confident in the results provided.”
